Dutch symphonic metal veterans Within Temptation are back with their eighth studio album, “Bleed Out”, four years after “Resist”. This is the first release under their own label, Force Music Recordings, which marks the beginning of a new era for the band and gives them more freedom with new releases. After listening to three singles prior to a release, I assumed that Within Temptation weren’t going to play it safe and would continue to add new elements to their music.
The band embellishes their signature symphonic sound with metalcore, djent, electronic, and modern metal elements, resulting in an interesting and engaging listening sensation. The production is full, dynamic, and crystal-clear. The mixing was done by Zakk Cervini (Lorna Shore, Crossfaith), the production was handled by Mathijs Tieken (The Charm the Fury) and Daniel Gibson (Delain, Tarja), and the mastering was done by the renowned Ted Jensen (Dream Theater, Ghost, Alice in Chains, In Flames, and others).
Sharon den Adel is as amazing as always… her voice, like fine wine, gets better with time. What more can I say?! She’s definitely one of the best singers of our time. Robert Westerholt, her life companion, guitarist, and songwriter, constantly stands by her side, and they always create wonderful music together. To be entirely frank, the band’s musicianship is impeccable!
There are no weak tracks on “Bleed Out”, but there are a few that stand out in particular. My personal favorites are: “We Go to War”, “Bleed Out”, “Wireless”, “Worth Dying For”, “Ritual”, “The Purge”, “Don’t Pray for Me”, “Shed My Skin” (with Annisokay) and “Unbroken”.
“Bleed Out” is a modern artistic gem that only Within Temptation can deliver. It’s heavy, melodic, symphonic, modern, intense, and emotional. It’s an album that will stick with you long after you’ve finished listening to it. The album is both challenging and rewarding and will undoubtedly become a favorite among the band’s fans, and not only!
