Six years is a long time to go without a new release, but it’s better to release a new work when you’re ready and have something to say than to rush it. Thus, Judas Priest, or else the Metal Gods, return with “Invincible Shield”, a new album that won’t leave their loyal fans unsatisfied in any way.
But let’s take things from the beginning. “Invincible Shield” has all the elements that made them legendary: heavy riffs, amazing vocals, powerful drumming, great lead guitar solos, and pure metal energy! The new album is mostly influenced by the 90’s and early 00’s eras of the band, but there are some 80’s vibes here and there. The most impressive thing of all is Rob’s vocals, which sound like he’s in his late 40s again… really amazing any way you look at it! Kudos also go to the iconic guitarist and composer Glenn Tipton, who, despite his known health issues, not only played the guitars but also co-wrote all the songs on the new album with Rob Halford.
The production is stunning… heavy, dynamic, and clean! Famed producer Andy Sneap (Accept, Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, Megadeth, etc.), who engineered, mixed, and produced the album, did a hell of a job!
The standard edition features 11 tracks, while the deluxe edition includes three bonus tracks. So, judging by the normal edition, which is 11+ minutes shorter, I can say that Judas Priest really delivered a strong and heavy album that reminds me of their old glory days at times. Some fans may get overexcited, others may grumble, but regardless, Judas Priest have managed to release an album that honors their metal legacy and may even introduce them to a younger audience that is unfamiliar with them, and that’s the most important thing of all. “Invincible Shield” is a reminder that Judas Priest remains as vital and influential as ever and that they are not called “Metal Gods” for nothing!
