Six years after “F.E.A.R”. Marillion are back with “An Hour Before It’s Dark”… a strong and emotive release that demonstrates the veteran rockers’ enduring relevance and eloquence six decades into their career. The album digs into themes of fear and gloom, partially inspired by the pandemic lockdown world from which it arose and partly by the planet’s approaching annihilation, with its grandiose sound and epic grandeur. The album is connected by a recurrent theme of darkness, but that doesn’t imply it’s depressing; rather, it’s a statement for our times. Guitarist Steve Rothery provides echoing, often sweet licks that counterbalance the dark vision, while the keyboards of Mark Kelly swirl and shimmer, along with Steve Hogarth’s distinctive vocals.
Marillion have their own way to express themselves via music. This pre-apocalyptic scenario sees them dealing with difficult times in their own peculiarly lyrical way. Awesome vocals, great compositions, excellent instrumentation, along with catchy melodies is what they offer here. The album also has a dark atmosphere, without being overly melancholic. I believe it reflects humanity’s feelings during these hard times.
“An Hour Before It’s Dark” is progressive, melodic, technical, emotional, deep and colorful, just like it’s cover artwork. The truth is that it will take you a few spins before fully immerse yourself in its evocative and somber atmosphere. The band continues to evolve and deliver music that is contemporary, stimulating, and emotionally engaging. The fans of the band and all the devotees of progressive rock who are searching for something a bit deeper and more expressive than today’s formulaic and repetitive music are encouraged to check out this album…
