In less than a year, after the amazing “Eagle Flight”, Revolution Saints returns with a new studio album. Most of the time, that doesn’t benefit the band, but you won’t know for sure until you listen to the final outcome. I could just finish the album review quickly, but I’d rather dive deep into the details.
Firstly, “Against the Winds” falls short of “Eagle Flight” in some significant sections. The musicianship is still excellent… after all, how can you go wrong with Deen Castronovo on vocals & drums, Joel Hoekstra on guitar, and Jeff Pilson on bass? It’s worth noting that the album’s songwriting falls short in comparison to the previous release. It lacks great melodies and big hooks in general. Furthermore, it is important to note that Dee, Joel, and Jeff add their own personal touches to songs that have already been written. While their performances enhance the songs, the final result does not change that much. The production is great, dynamic, and clean as usual.
Out of the 11 songs, the ones that make a difference are “Changing My Mind”, “Can’t End It Right Now”, “Lost in Damnation”, “Show Me Your Light”, “Divine Wings”, and “No Turning Back”. Although the rest are not bad, I think they are a bit generic. Then again, it’s always a delight to hear Deen’s incredible vocals and Joel’s killer solos.
Aside from the formulaic songwriting in some parts, “Against the Winds” is a solid album that will please the band’s followers in general. If not completely, they will at least find some songs to relish. It’s definitely worth a listen, but let’s hope they all take a break so they can come back with even more hunger and enthusiasm.
