Silver Bullet returns with their third studio album, which features new vocalist Bruno Proveschi. I suppose the singer change is crucial for the band’s sound and for the old fans. Bruno’s vocal range is larger compared to his predecessor, and I believe he suits the band’s music perfectly. In addition, the four years since their previous album seem to have benefited the band in terms of songwriting and music ideas in general.
“Shadowfall”, the new album, was recorded, mixed and produced by the band’s guitarist Hannes Horma (ex-Turisas) and Janne Saksa (Turisas, Battlelore, Cardiant, Mokoma, etc.). The mastering was done by the renowned Svante Forsbäck (Amberian Dawn, Amorphis, Apocalyptica, Avatarium, Delain, etc.). Simply put, the sound is heavy, full and punchy.
The symphonic opening track, “Overture to Armageddon” acts as an intro to the first proper track “Shadow of a Curse”, a heavy/power metal hymn with sharp riffs, thundering drums and an amazing melodic chorus! “The Ones to Fall” is a mid-tempo melodic metal track with an incredibly catchy refrain. “Creatures of the Night” with its acoustic and atmospheric parts adds more variety to the album. “Soul Reaver” is the fastest track on the album… a speed power metal track by Blind Guardian. “… And Then Comes Oblivion” is a beautiful and emotional power metal ballad. “Nighthunter” is a strong heavy/power track with some great choir vocals. The first half of “Dusk of Dawn” is a lyrical mid-tempo track with nice acoustic parts and a strong chorus, while the second half is faster and has a power metal flavor. “Falling Down” is another highlight… a melodic metal song with catchy hooks and wonderful harmonies. “The Thirteen Nails” closes the album on a high note, since it is one of the album’s strongest compositions. A well-crafted song with excellent melodies and a fantastic refrain.
Silver Bullet is not your typical power metal band that plays music full of clichés. The band’s power metal is embellished with classic metal elements, along with symphonic parts here and there. The final outcome is really stunning. Apart from that, practically every song has great vocal lines. They have paid careful attention to the details, and their songs do not contain dull or overused melodies. Moreover, the use of the real choir adds more depth and epicness to the overall sound. All the performances, including the brilliant orchestrations, are particularly noteworthy.
Finally, “Shadowfall” is an astonishing album that highlights Silver Bullet’s talent and progression as a band. It is definitely one of the best power metal albums of 2023. What a start to the year!
