Greek melodic metal outfit Sunburst, formed in 2011, returns with their sophomore album “Manifesto”, following their 2016 debut “Fragments of Creation”. Led by the soaring vocals of Vasilis Georgiou, with guitar virtuoso Gus Drax, Nick Grey on bass, and Kostas Milonas on drums, this quartet proves they’re ready to dominate. After an eight-year gap, they’ve sharpened their blades and come out swinging with a record that’s pure fire! The album also features John K. on orchestral arrangements for “The Flood”, “Hollow Lies”, and “Nocturne”, as well as Bob Katsionis (solo, ex Firewind, ex Outloud, etc.) on keyboards.
“Manifesto” blends power metal, progressive metal, and melodic metal masterfully. The songwriting, driven by Georgiou and Drax, is packed with strong melodies and intricate riffs that grab you from the first note. Vasilis’ vocals truly shine here, and sometimes bring to mind Kamelot’s Tommy Karevik. Gus’ guitar work weaves in and out of shredding solos and lush harmonies, while the rhythm section of Grey and Milonas keeps everything solid and in sync.
The production is powerful and heavy. The album was mixed and mastered by Steve Lado and produced by the band along with Steve.
Some personal favorites that highlight the band’s musical prowess are “The Flood”, “Hollow Lies”, “Samaritan”, “Perpetual Descent”, “From the Cradle to the Grave”, “Manifesto”, and “Nocturne”. The orchestral arrangements and cinematic vibe add depth, making the album truly captivating.
“Manifesto” will put Sunburst in the big leagues of melodic prog power metal. It captures the melodic power metal spirit of Kamelot, Conception, Symphony X, and Evergrey while forging their own path. Sunburst has successfully crafted an album that not only meets but exceeds expectations, solidifying their place as one of Greece’s best prog power metal acts.
