It’s been four years since their debut release, “In Another Time”, but I suppose Tanith, like other bands, should have put out a new album if the difficult covid time hadn’t held them back. This time, the band appears as a trio, as the guitarist Charlie Newton stepped out at the last minute for his own reasons. I’m sure the band was taken aback for a bit, but as you know, the show must go on, as nothing can stop a well-oiled rockin’ machine like them. Their characteristic twin-guitar sound is still present, as they enlisted the assistance of the guitarist Andee Blacksugar (KMFDM, Blondie) in the studio.
From the very first notes, it becomes evident that Tanith has crafted an album which picks up from where they left off on their acclaimed debut, exploring a wide range of musical influences while remaining true to their vintage sound generally. The band continues to pay homage to the pioneers of classic rock, hard rock, and heavy rock from the 70s, while infusing their own personality and contemporary sensibilities into each composition.
The production is nothing short of amazing; organic, warm, and rich. It’s no surprise, given that the album was recorded and mastered on 24-track analog tape. Yeah, I know it sounds “weird” for a band to record on an analog tape in 2023, but if you want the precise outcome heard on “Voyage”, this is the way to do it! The band produced the record, with Hugh Pool handling engineering and mixing and Scott Hull (Joe Lynn Turner, Twisted Sister) doing the mastering. The instruments breathe with life, creating a dynamic sonic landscape that harkens back to the heyday of rock.
Of course, a special mention must be done to the remarkable instrumentation that permeates every track. Cindy Maynard (vocals, bass), Russ Tippins (vocals, guitars), and Keith Robinson (drums) have done an excellent job despite having to work separately due to distance and the covid restrictions, as Russ is based in the UK and the other two in New York.
Tanith has returned to the scene, ready to take us on a sonic journey through a world of vintage riffs, captivating melodies, and nostalgic atmosphere. If you long for the 70s rock era, then Tanith can easily transport you back to the days when rock music was pure and enchanting. Tanith’s dedication to capturing the spirit of 70s classic rock, hard rock and heavy rock music is commendable.
