The history of the band Taproot showed that bands can evolve from the ashes. Formed in Ann Arbor, Michigan, back in 1997, they released three albums independently before ever getting signed to a major deal.
From here, the last decade of the band has been a bit quiet, other than some reunion shows, the release of a rarities collection called “Besides” in 2016, and some other special appearances. Interestingly enough, in early 2023, they re-emerged with a condensed version of “Besides”, titled “Best of Besides”.
Now, in 2023, they’ve returned with the album “SC\SSRS”…
They released the record’s first single, “VIP (V\CT\M \ PLAY)”, in April, and it was a tease prior to the full release. Then, as a tease, Taproot sat on the next release, six months later, to drop the next single, “Favourite Song”. Reminiscent of something you might have heard off “Welcome”, the track features a guest spot from Nonpoint’s Elias Soriano.
“No One Else to Blame” has amazing vocals and deep riffing, making this one of the heaviest songs on the album. It’s a rager that shows Taproot hasn’t watered things down over the years. On the other side of things, if you’re looking for a ballad, you’ll find it in “Love Without You”, which features Detroit singer Audrey Ray.
It’s said that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. Taproot have completely dismantled that stigma by revisiting their history and reviving their sound for a modern audience. They’ve successfully made what was old feel nu again!
