I’ve been following The Windmill since 2013, when they released their sophomore album, “The Continuation”. Even though they put out albums once in a blue moon, they always make sure to deliver quality work no matter what. The new studio work, “Mindscapes” comes out almost 6 years after “Tribus”, which was out back in 2018.
Musically the band continues on the same heavy melodic prog path with influences from Jethro Tull, Camel, Arena, IQ, Marillion, Pendragon, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Alan Parsons, and The Flower Kings among others. Apart from their flute, which reminds of Jethro Tull, Erik’s voice, along with great melodies, makes their prog rock music even more tasteful and enjoyable also for the non-prog rock fans.
The album opens with the grandiose “Fear”, where you can hear all the influences of the band in 22+ minutes. This track is a rollercoaster of emotions, beginning with a hauntingly beautiful organ and synth interplay that evolves into a complex texture of time signatures and tempo shifts. Quite a bold way to open an album, but The Windmill “fear” nothing.
“Calton Hill” is an amazing melodic prog song that lasts around 5 minutes. This song dives into a more classic rock vibe while maintaining the progressive roots.
“I Still Care” starts with a piano melody and slowly builds up. A very emotional prog piece with beautiful melodies that will surely touch you in every way.
“Nothing in Return” closes the album in a heavy prog way with flute and rockin’ guitars. A song that will please those who like their prog rock a bit heavier.
The production is full, clear, and crisp. The album was produced and arranged by the band and mixed and mastered by renowned producer and musician Karl Groom (Threshold).
The old-school prog rock influences with a modern, heavier edge create a fresh yet familiar sound that will appeal to longtime prog fans and newcomers alike.
“Mindscapes” impresses with its wonderful melodies, complex compositions and strong musicianship. It’s an album that grows on you with each spin.
“Mindscapes” is a worthy successor to the band’s previous works and one of the top prog rock albums of 2024!
