Khymera are back with their seventh studio album “Hold Your Ground”, around 3 years after “Master of Illusions”. Khymera is being regarded as a Dennis Ward project for a long time now, thus the new release features Dennis Ward on lead vocals, bass, and keyboards, Michael Klein (Wicked Sensation, Place Vendome) on guitar, Eric Ragno (Takara, Tony Mills, Michael Bormann, etc.) on keyboards, Michael Kolar (David Readman) on drums, and Pete Newdeck (Eden’s Curse, AOR, Midnite City, etc.) on backing vocals. The line-up is the same as on the previous album.
Although Khymera’s musical style is traditional AOR / Melodic Rock, I can hear some modern touches here and there. Of course, the full and polished production enhances the final outcome. Dennis is a hell of a producer, so I had no concerns about the album’s sound. Moreover, Dennis is an amazing songwriter, who knows how to write great tracks with catchy melodies. He also showcases his singing skills, which is nothing new to those who have been following the band for years. Additionally, the musicianship on “Hold Your Ground” is quite impressive, with each member of Khymera bringing their special talents to the table.
All the tracks are well-written, but I think that “Don’t Wait for Love”, “Firestarter”, “Hear Me Calling”, “Sail on Forever”, “Our Love is Killing Me”, “Hear What I’m Saying”, “Could Have Been Us” and “Am I Dreaming” will appeal to all the AOR and melodic rock devotees at large.
“Hold Your Ground” album is an impressive collection of AOR / Melodic Rock tracks that is guaranteed to keep the listeners engaged from start to finish. Dennis and his guys have done it again. I don’t think it’s possible to go wrong with Dennis behind the console and in charge of the songwriting. If you fancy AOR & Melodic Rock music, don’t let this album pass you by.
