The 1990s ushered in a new trend in the global music arena. Heavy Metal music, which had dominated the 1980s, faded away and the epic sound that’s associated with rock music entered the scene. This transition provided a pathway for alternative music groups to achieve runaway success. As a result, many alternative rock songs started topping mainstream music charts. In light of this, here are the five top rock bands of the 90s.

1. Nirvana

This is no doubt the most iconic and most popular rock band to have impacted the music landscape of the 90s. Formed in 1987, Nirvana gained huge success in 1991 after they released the song “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. One of Nirvana’s best-selling albums is “Nevermind”, which sold over 10 million copies in the US alone. Credited with being a massive the grunge movement’s poster child, this group’s influence can still be felt today.

2. Green Day

Formed in 1987, Green Day is another alternative rock band that dominated the 1990s music scene. It enjoyed a decent following during its formative years but gained huge commercial success after releasing the album “Dookie” in 1994. This album was one of the best-sellers of that decade with more than 10 million copies sold. The band won several awards including the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance and led the way for a wave of 90s punk.

3. Blink-182

It’s almost impossible to list the best 90s rock bands without mentioning Blink 182. Formed in 1992, it is a pop-punk and rock music group made up of three singers. However, the band did not gain much popularity until 1997 when it released the album “Dude Ranch”. This album was one of the group’s best-selling works, going platinum within a year of its release.

4. Foo Fighters

The second half of the 90s decade witnessed Foo Fighters as the top rock music act. The group was formed in 1994 by Dave Grohl, a former member of Nirvana. In 1997, the group released its album “The Colour and the Shape”, which gained huge commercial success. Foo Fighters closed the decade with another bestselling Grammy-winning album titled “There’s Nothing Left to Lose”.

5. The Offspring

Formed in 1984, The Offspring is a rock band based in California. It is known for its blend of punk, alternative pop and hardcore music. In addition, it’s often credited for generating interest in mainstream punk rock music in the 90s. One of the group’s best-selling albums is “Smash”, which sold more than 11 million copies worldwide. Today, The Offspring remains one of the best punk rock bands in history.

Conclusion

Rock re-emerged in the 1990s and once again grew to be one of the most popular genres. This time though, by fusing elements of heavy metal and punk, it created grunge, a new brand of rock. The genre is still popular today with many people thronging gigs to see their favourite singers perform. If you are a 90s rock band fan, then you should definitely check out some classic rock-themed slot games like NetEnt’s Guns N’ Roses available now at Platincasino.
