Oblivion Protocol is a new music project founded by Threshold keyboard player and songwriter Richard West. Richard, who is also the lead singer, is joined by three well-known musicians: guitarist Ruud Jolie (Within Temptation), bassist Simon Andersson (Darkwater), and drummer Darby Todd (Devin Townsend). Moreover, Karl Groom from Threshold has added some truly captivating guitar solos to the album. The debut album is called “The Fall of the Shires”, and it was written as a follow-up to Threshold’s concept album “Legends of the Shires” from 2017. When the other Threshold members decided not to record a sequel to “Legends of the Shires”, Richard opted to go the extra mile to write and record this album. And we are really delighted that he went all the way.
The band combines prog rock and prog metal with acoustic and atmospheric elements to create an intriguing final outcome. The melodies on all songs are beautiful, and Richard sings with amazing passion and emotion, despite not being a top-class vocalist. All of his performances are fantastic. The production is full, dynamic, and clean. Of course, all credit goes to Richard, who has once again delivered the goods.
Even though “The Fall of the Shires” is a concept album, it is around 41 minutes long, making it more engaging even for non-prog rock/metal fans. Let alone the memorable melodies and dark atmosphere, which add emphasis and emotion to their music. It may take a few spins to get into it, but after a while, it will be impossible not to listen to the album from start to finish repeatedly. “The Fall of the Shires” is a work of art that perfectly blends prog rock and prog metal. The journey through this musical labyrinth is nothing short of enthralling. Embrace the mystery, and let the music transport you to the enigmatic realm of the Oblivion Protocol.
